COURSE OUTLINES
BITS AND BYTES
GRADE 7 (COMY7)
(compulsory for Grade 7 students)
This course is for students who are interested in learning new concepts using the computer. An emphasis is placed on learning the keyboard and developing keyboarding continuity. Students will be exposed to a variety of different computer programs as well as proper use of the internet and email accounts.

(compulsory for Grade 8 students)
This course is for students who are interested in expanding their knowledge of computer concepts. Students will continue to learn many different computer programs as well as proper use of the internet and email accounts. Advanced word processing skills, consumer skills, career exploration and the development of English language arts concepts will be covered.
APPLYING INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY 1 (ICT 1) – 15G
S1 - 15F
The purpose of this course is to reinforce and extend the computer knowledge and skills acquired by students in the Early and Middle Years. This course will prepare students to use computer skills to demonstrate their learning and is the perfect opportunity for students to “sample” the various computer streams or specialty areas currently offered at Gordon Bell. A variety of topics will be covered such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet/web page design, graphics/desktop publishing, presentations and multimedia.
APPLYING INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY 2 (ICT 2) – 15G
S1 - 15F
This course is a continuation of the ICT 1 program and will promote more advanced computer concepts. A more in-depth look at the ICT 1 topics will be covered along with topics such as file management, purchasing hardware, animation, ethical and legal issues related to technology and self assessment will be covered.
FUTURES IN BUSINESS 15G
S1 (FUBR1G)
This course is developed to promote the understanding of how school and home relate to the world of business. Students will begin to learn about the world around them and understand how they can participate as volunteers, employees or entrepreneurs. Students will be introduced to banking, record keeping, management skills and will run a small business within the school for experience.
KEYBOARDING 25S/START YOUR OWN BUSINESS 25G
S2
These 2 half courses will be combined to give students one full credit. Keyboarding is designed to equip students will life long keyboarding skills that will help them during their education and during their work experiences. The goal of mastering the keyboard using the proper fingering techniques is a priority as well as learning the proper layout for business and personal documents.
Start Your Own Business is designed to emphasize skills that will help students plan and start a small business, as well as promote entrepreneurial skills. Students will run a small business within the school to develop these skills.
PRINT COMMUNICATIONS 25S/DESKTOP PUBLISHING 35S
S2/S3 (previously Word Processing 30S)
These 2 half courses will be combined to give students one full credit. Desktop Publishing and advanced word processing skills will be studied. This course is designed to improve student’s keyboarding skills and to acquire proficiency in using a variety of computer software. Students will plan and produce documents that meet recognized standards. Documents such as letters, labels, envelopes, agendas, minutes, resumes and research papers will be completed in the Print Communication section. Documents such as brochures, flyers, media inserts, newsletters, posters and programs will be completed in the Desktop Publishing section. Students will acquire skills that can use at entry level jobs or for future post secondary purposes.
RELATIONAL DATABASES 35S/DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS 35S
S3 (previously Software Applications 30S)
These 2 half courses will be combined to give students one full credit. This course is designed to promote mastery of spreadsheets and data bases. These applications are useful to individuals in personal and business affairs, community work and other facets of private or public life. Topics such as cell references, linking, graphing, validity and integrity of data will be covered in the spreadsheet section. Planning, creating, exporting, merging and modifying data with studied in the data base section of the course. Students will gain a full understanding of the use and importance of spreadsheets and data bases.
DIGITAL PICTURES 25S/WEBDESIGN 35S
S2/S3
These 2 half courses will be combined to give students one full credit. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to convey a message through an original image and to design, develop and publish a simple website to display information. Some work on the school yearbook will be completed along with a variety of other school related activities.
2-D ANIMATION 35S/ 3-D MODELING 35S
These 2 half courses will be combined to give students one full credit. 2-D animation will provide students with the skills and knowledge to create two-dimensional animations by creating animation storyboards, frame rate for movement, morphing and distorting of images. 3-D Modeling will provide the students with the skills and knowledge to use software to create three-dimensional models that represent real objects or illustrate ideas.
VISIONS AND VENTURES 30S
S3 (VIVR3S)
This full credit course is designed to promote the skill in independence and entrepreneurship to young adults. With this changing world, our young adults will need to develop strong initiatives to promote themselves and their skills to today’s world of work. This course has been developed to allow students to explore strengths and interests that will help them in the future. Students will be explore business opportunities, ideas, ventures and develop a Business Plan based on their findings.
ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES 30S
S3 (ACPR3S)
This course has been developed to give students employable skills. Students will learn the basic concepts of accounting and will learn how to apply these concepts to entry level positions and everyday life. The complete accounting cycle will be introduced and studied as well as acceptable principles for further studies in accounting.
ACCOUNTING SYSTEMS 40S
This course is a continuation of Accounting 30S with the added component of computerized accounting. Students will learn the most current accounting software package and apply previous understanding of accounting to real-life situations.
LAW 40S
S4 (LAWR4S)
This course has been developed to provide an introduction to the principles, practices and consequences of law. This course is valuable for preparing for university or vocational education. It provides a basic understanding of the legal system and its impact on society. Units will include the study of how laws are made, rights and freedoms, criminal law, tort law, family law and contract law.
ICT PROGRAM - CAREER EDUCATION 41G/COOPERATIVE EDUCATION 41G
S4 (CAEY4G/COEY4G)
This is a 2 credit course that is part of the six credits needed to complete the Information Communication Technology Certificate offered at Gordon Bell. This program was developed for students who wish to learn more about the world of work and the opportunities available to students after high school. Students who participate in this program will receive one credit for classroom work by participating and completing work and assignments related to job searching, interviews, cover letters, resumes, skills inventories and a study of the current labour market. The second credit will be received for participating and completing a work education component of the course. Students will be placed at job sites appropriate to their job interests and will mentor with an employer to learn new and valuable skills.
BASIC KEYBOARDING/BEGINNER KEYBOARDING 20G
S2 (TYKY2G)
This course has been developed for students who have little or no computer or keyboarding skills. Students will learn the alphabetic and non-alphabetic keyboard and will learn how to save and print documents. The development of English skills will be promoted along with the study of basic formatting skills such as bold, italic, centering, etc.
INTERMEDIATE KEYBOARDING 30G/ADVANCED KEYBOARDING 40G
S3/S4 (TYKY 3G and TYKY 4G)
Students who can obtain a speed of 25 words per minute may register for this course. Students will continue to master the keyboard and develop speed and accuracy while completing drills and assignments. Topics such as letters, outlines, reports, tables and business documents are some of the areas covered.
